New York Ideas 2015

Louise Harpman was invited to curate a show of student design work at the Atlantic and Aspen Institute’s fourth annual New York Ideas Conference. This event highlights people, ideas and trends that are predicted to change the future of the city. Undergraduates from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study were the first New York City college students invited to this prestigious conference.

Students were selected from the Architecture and Urban Design LAB courses taught by professors Louise Harpman and Mitchell Joachim. All the featured projects sought to identify system-based urban design problems, and to propose design solutions to address them.

911, Please Hold by Katherine O’Kelly—a proposal to improve emergency response time for life-threatening situations.

Tangerine Airport NYC by Jack Richards—a new airport in New York Harbor accessed primarily by high-speed ferries.

Hoop House by Margaret Changler—a proposal to make the city’s outdoor basketball courts usable year-round.

Common Underground by Jiachen Xu—a new type of community center for unsheltered homeless people.

NYC Soundscapes by Max Theony—a set of proposals to dampen urban noise and promote positive soundscapes.

Macrosea Academy by Rayne Holm, Timothe Husson, Sage Youngblood—a proposal for a new high school within a large maker space.
