River Bend House
This house on the Saugatuck River engages the landscape in a way that purposefully blurs the distinction between built and natural forms. The house is approached from a road that begins high on a cliff above, so that the roofscape–or fifth façade–becomes a critical element of the design. Terraces are planted with year-round, region-specific succulents so that projecting rooms feel like they are fully immersed in the landscape. Like other modern glass houses, the view becomes the primary interior decoration, animating the spaces with light and transparency during the day and reflectivity at night.
