Design Build Texas

DESIGN BUILD TEXAS is the first design/build project to be offered at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture. Sixteen students—eight undergraduates and eight graduate students, evenly split between men and women—worked with me to design and build this 1,300 sf house in the Texas Hill Country. As a demonstration project for site sensitive, sustainable design, the students also worked with landscape ecologists, structural engineers, soil specialists, septic engineers, and rainwater collection experts. Adjunct faculty member Russell Krepart directed the student workers for three months during the summer build session, and undergraduate Dale Buehler completed the project with additional crewmembers the following spring. The house has won many awards and been widely published. Soon after its completion, the house was featured at the national AIA convention in San Antonion, TX and at the United States Green Building conference in Portland, OR.
